A short time ago, the United States military began major combat operations in Iran.

Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime — a vicious group of very hard, terrible people.

Its menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas, and our allies throughout the world. For 47 years, the Iranian regime has chanted “Death to America” and waged an unending campaign of bloodshed and mass murder, targeting the United States, our troops, and innocent people in many countries.

Among the regime’s very first acts was backing the violent takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, holding dozens of American hostages for 444 days. In 1983, Iran’s proxies carried out the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut that killed 241 American military personnel. In 2000, they were involved in the attack on the USS Cole, where many Americans died.

Iranian forces killed and maimed hundreds of American service members in Iraq. The regime’s proxies have launched countless attacks against American forces stationed in the Middle East in recent years, as well as U.S. naval and commercial vessels in international shipping lanes.

It has been mass terror — and we will not put up with it any longer.

From Lebanon to Yemen, and Syria to Iraq, the regime has armed, trained, and funded terrorist militias that have soaked the earth with blood.

It was Iran’s proxy Hamas that launched the monstrous October 7 attacks on Israel, slaughtering more than 1,000 innocent people, including 46 Americans, while taking 12 of our citizens hostage. It was brutal — something like the world has never seen before.

Iran is the world’s number one state sponsor of terror and has recently killed tens of thousands of its own citizens as they protested in the streets.

It has always been the policy of the United States — and in particular my administration — that this terrorist regime can never have a nuclear weapon. I will say it again: they can never have a nuclear weapon.

That is why, in Operation Midnight Hammer last June, we obliterated the regime’s nuclear program at Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

After that attack, we warned them never to resume their malicious pursuit of nuclear weapons, and we repeatedly sought to make a deal. We tried. Iran refused, just as it has for decades. They rejected every opportunity to renounce their nuclear ambitions.

Instead, they attempted to rebuild their nuclear program and continued developing long-range missiles that now threaten our allies in Europe, our troops overseas, and could soon reach the American homeland.

Imagine how emboldened this regime would be if it were armed with nuclear weapons.

For these reasons, the United States military is undertaking a massive and ongoing operation to prevent this wicked dictatorship from threatening America and our core national security interests.

We are going to destroy their missiles and level their missile industry to the ground. It will be obliterated. We are going to annihilate their navy. We are going to ensure that the regime’s terrorist proxies can no longer destabilize the region or attack our forces. They will no longer use IEDs or roadside bombs to wound and kill thousands, including many Americans.

And we will ensure that Iran does not obtain a nuclear weapon.

It is a very simple message: they will never have a nuclear weapon.

This regime will soon learn that no one should challenge the strength and might of the United States Armed Forces. I rebuilt our military in my first administration, and there is no military on earth close to its power, strength, or sophistication.

My administration has taken every possible step to minimize the risk to U.S. personnel in the region. Even so, I do not make this statement lightly — the Iranian regime seeks to kill. Courageous American heroes may be lost. We may have casualties. That happens in war.

But we are doing this not for today — we are doing this for the future. It is a noble mission.

We pray for every service member who is risking his or her life to ensure that Americans and our children will never be threatened by a nuclear-armed Iran. We ask God to protect our heroes in harm’s way, and we trust that with His help, the men and women of the Armed Forces will prevail.

To the members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, the armed forces, and the police, I say tonight: lay down your weapons and receive complete immunity. Otherwise, you will face certain death.

Lay down your arms. You will be treated fairly with total immunity. Or you will face certain death.

Finally, to the proud people of Iran, I say this: the hour of your freedom is at hand.

Stay sheltered. Do not leave your homes. It is dangerous outside. Bombs will be dropping.

When we are finished, take over your government. It will be yours to take. This may be your only chance for generations.

For many years, you asked for America’s help, but you did not receive it. No president was willing to do what I am willing to do tonight.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday used a high-profile briefing to unveil what the Trump administration called a “historic” breakthrough with China on fentanyl precursors, while also framing the soon-to-end 43-day government shutdown and ongoing Epstein document fights as products of Democratic obstruction and “manufactured hoaxes.”

Joining Leavitt at the podium was FBI Director Kash Patel, who announced that Beijing has agreed to sweeping new controls on the chemicals used to manufacture fentanyl, the synthetic opioid that remains the leading driver of U.S. overdose deaths.

Trump–Xi diplomacy leads to Beijing fentanyl pledge

Patel said his trip to Beijing last week — the first visit by an FBI director to China in more than a decade — followed President Donald Trump’s recent Asia swing and summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping, during which the two leaders discussed a crackdown on fentanyl production and trafficking.

“At that meeting, the leaders reached an agreement,” Patel said, noting that nearly 100,000 Americans died of fentanyl overdoses in the past year.

According to Patel, the People’s Republic of China has now:

• Fully designated and listed all 13 chemical precursors used to make illicit fentanyl

• Agreed to control seven additional chemical subsidiaries involved in producing the drug

“Effective immediately, essentially, President Trump has shut off the pipeline that creates fentanyl, that kills tens of thousands of Americans,” Patel said, calling the move a “first-in-its-kind achievement by any president” and crediting Trump, Attorney General Pam Bondi, Deputy Attorney General Blanche, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and U.S. Ambassador David Perdue in Beijing.

Patel argued that by targeting precursors at the source in China, the U.S. and its partners can severely disrupt the ability of Mexican drug cartels and other transnational criminal organizations to manufacture fentanyl bound for the U.S. market.

The agreement mirrors and expands on earlier U.S.–China cooperation under previous administrations, when Beijing moved to schedule fentanyl-class substances and certain key precursors but often left gaps in enforcement and regulation.

Outside analysts have long warned that Chinese chemical firms and intermediaries have been a primary supplier of fentanyl precursors to Mexican cartels and other networks.

Patel said the new commitments from Beijing came only after what he described as “historic engagement” between Trump and Xi, followed by intensive negotiations among U.S. and Chinese law enforcement ministries.

“This historic achievement will save lives,” Patel said. “This FBI will fearlessly follow in his footsteps to ensure that this mission of safeguarding the American public is achieved every single day.”

Fostering the Future: Upcoming executive order with First Lady

Before turning to questions, Leavitt announced that on Thursday President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will appear in the East Room for an executive order signing aimed at expanding support for young adults aging out of foster care.

The order, she said, will “expand opportunities for education, career development, housing, and other resources for young people transitioning from foster care to adulthood.” The effort is part of the First Lady’s “Fostering the Future” initiative under her broader Be Best campaign.

White House blames Democrats for record shutdown

In a lengthy statement from the lectern, Leavitt then pivoted to the federal government shutdown, which has stretched to 43 days — the longest in U.S. history. She accused Democrats of “holding the country hostage” to force taxpayer-funded health care for undocumented immigrants and to juice turnout among their base.

“The damage caused by the Democrats with this reckless government shutdown cannot be forgotten,” Leavitt said, arguing that:

• Hundreds of thousands of federal employees missed paychecks

• Tens of billions of dollars in wages and benefits for workers were delayed

• Millions of low-income Americans temporarily missed SNAP food benefits

• Nearly 20,000 flights were delayed due to staffing shortages

Independent estimates from the Congressional Budget Office and private economists have warned that the prolonged shutdown could cut fourth-quarter GDP growth by 1–2 percentage points and permanently erase billions of dollars in economic activity.

Leavitt said the White House now expects a “clean continuing resolution” to pass Congress and land on the President’s desk by tonight, reopening the government on terms she insisted Trump and Republicans have supported “from day one.”

Responding to renewed media focus on inflation and the cost of living, Leavitt contrasted coverage of today’s affordability issues with what she called “a lack of serious scrutiny” when inflation surged to 9% under President Joe Biden — a figure she characterized as “the worst inflation crisis in modern American history.”

Since taking office, she said, Trump has:

• Signed what she called “the largest middle-class tax cuts in American history,” including no tax on tips, overtime, and Social Security income starting next year

• “Unleashed American energy dominance,” arguing that gas prices are now at their lowest level in five years and overall energy bills are falling

• Slashed regulations, claiming a ratio of 30 regulations cut for every new one added, to lower costs for small businesses and spur hiring

Independent data show that overdose, inflation, and growth trends have all been in flux. Drug overdoses remain near historic highs, though preliminary 2023 and 2024 data show a modest decline in total deaths.

Leavitt maintained that the Trump agenda is “cleaning up the economic disaster that was created by Joe Biden” and vowed that the administration will continue to focus on wages, housing, energy costs, and prescription drug prices.

Epstein files, BBC fight, and transparency questions

The briefing quickly turned combative when reporters pressed Leavitt on newly released Epstein-related emails and the administration’s posture toward transparency on the scandal.

CBS’ Weijia Jiang asked whether the emails released by House Democrats show Trump spending hours at Jeffrey Epstein’s home with a victim. Leavitt rejected the premise, saying the emails “prove absolutely nothing other than the fact that President Trump did nothing wrong.”

“This is truly a manufactured hoax by the Democrat Party,” she said, accusing Democrats of only raising Epstein now that Trump is back in the Oval Office and suggesting the timing of the latest document leak was meant to distract from the shutdown’s end.

Leavitt also dismissed questions about whether Trump is considering a pardon for Ghislaine Maxwell, saying it is “not something he’s talking about or even thinking about at this moment in time.

Legal fight over SNAP funding during the shutdown

Reporters also pressed the Press Secretary on why the administration went to court over SNAP funding during the shutdown even as Leavitt highlighted missed benefits as a key harm inflicted on low-income families.

Leavitt said the administration had already tapped a contingency fund to keep food assistance flowing but balked when a federal judge pushed them to reprogram money from a children’s nutrition fund.

“That is judicial overreach at its finest,” she said. “You shouldn’t tell the President which fund he has to rob because the Democrats are holding the country hostage.”

She noted that once the government reopens, SNAP recipients will receive full benefits, which she insisted “is what President Trump has always wanted to do.”

$2,000 tariff checks and the ‘DOGE dividend’

In another headline-grabbing exchange, Leavitt confirmed that the White House is actively exploring Trump’s proposal to use tariff revenue to fund $2,000 checks to U.S. citizens — on top of earlier talk of a “DOGE dividend” linked to the administration’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative.

“Trillions of dollars are expected to continue to pour in,” Leavitt said, calling the Supreme Court case over Trump’s tariff authority “vital” to preserving what she described as a central tool for boosting U.S. manufacturing and negotiating favorable trade deals.

The first question of the day came from GB News’ Bev Turner, who asked whether the President is prepared to “bankrupt the BBC” over what Trump’s lawyers allege were malicious edits in a documentary that distorted his remarks.

Leavitt said Trump maintains a “very good relationship” with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer but views the BBC as “a leftist propaganda machine…subsidized by British taxpayers.”

She confirmed that Trump’s external legal team has sued the BBC and said whether the broadcaster chooses to apologize “is up to them.”

Health, Hungary, and looking ahead

“When I came out of the plane, I said, ‘Good afternoon, dear neighbor, very good to see you in good health and to see you alive.’”

Leavitt reminded the press that this is not Trump’s first breakthrough. In just seven months of his second term, he has already helped resolve conflicts in Armenia and Azerbaijan, Rwanda and the DRC, and cooled tensions between India and Pakistan.

This comes on top of the historic Abraham Accords during his first term.

“The president is uniquely capable of achieving peace where others have failed,” Leavitt said.

Mainstream pundits scoffed when Trump claimed he could end the Ukraine war quickly. Yet now, world leaders are flying to Washington to meet with him — acknowledging what Americans already know: Trump is the Peace President.

While reshaping the world abroad, Trump is also restoring order here at home. Since August 7, law enforcement under his direction has made 465 arrests in Washington, D.C. Media Distortions and the Bigger Picture

Throughout the briefing, Leavitt pushed back against the media’s attempts to frame Trump’s diplomacy as failure. Critics said meeting Putin “legitimized” him or that no final deal meant defeat. Yet the very leaders with the most at stake — Zelenskyy, Stubb, Rutte — praised Trump’s progress.

Leavitt celebrated fresh economic data showing inflation at a 1.9% average annual pace during Trump’s first six months in office — the lowest since before the Biden administration. Key points include:

• Gasoline down nearly 10% from last year; propane down 2.5%.

• Egg prices down 20% since January.

• Wage growth outpacing inflation, with real wages up 1.3% year-over-year.

• Small business optimism at a five-month high.

“Ignore the panicans and trust in President Trump,” Leavitt said. “The America First economic agenda is working.”
